Lea Valley District Family Pirate Camp 2010

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,

The Family Pirate Camp seems a long way off, May 28^th - 30^th 2010, however, there be only a limited number of spaces available and these be allocated on a first come first served basis. So read on to find out how to reserve yer places.

For as little as £20 per person, ye can have a whole weekend of fun and adventure, with all the meals provided. Ye can do as many activities, from Raftin’ to Climbin’, that ye can manage. Or if ye like as few as ye wish to do, go on have a relaxing weekend around the camp fire. All prices are inclusive of camp fees, food and activity costs. The one thing ye have to do of course is look after yer own young pirates, leave the rest of the organising to us.

Payment/ Application

The cost be £20 per pirate (aged 6 or over). £10 per future pirate (aged 3 – 5years 11 months) and free to those who are younger. These cover the site fees, yer food* and all activities.

*We would not be able to provide food for the very young; however, we be able to provide the means to heat yer bottles and other baby foods.

To secure yer families place we be requirin’ a deposit of 50% of yer families total cost together with the attached application form. These need to be with yer groups leaders by Friday 5^th Feb and the remaining balance needs to be in by 9^th April, this be during the Easter Holidays.

The easiest and preferred way to pay this is by a current dated cheque for the deposit together with a pre dated cheque (dated the 9^th April 2009) with the total balance on. This will help to ease our administration considerably.

These should be handed in to yer Groups’ Leaders in an envelope marked “Family Pirate Camp 10”, along with yer Scout Groups’ name and yer family name. All cheques should be made payable to Lea Valley District Scout Council.

Tents

For those families who do not have tents, yer Scout Group should be able to lend ye one for the weekend, please speak to yer groups leaders for further information.

Swine Flu Information

Scouting is about to enter the winter period of camps and activities. The following advice is based on information from the Directgov website, and should help you in how to deal with any potential outbreaks of swine flu.

Activities

Activities should continue as normal but leaders of activities should be alert.

Any youth Member with flu-like symptoms should be returned home as soon as possible and should contact - but not visit - their GP and seek treatment.

Symptoms

The symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu but may be more severe.

The typical symptoms are:

sudden fever
sudden cough

Other symptoms may include:

headache
tiredness
chills
aching muscles
limb or joint pain
diarrhoea or stomach upset
sore throat
runny nose
sneezing
loss of appetite.

In Mid August Slip End Cubs and leaders went to Phasels Wood Campsite near Hemel for our annual Summer Camp.

We decided to camp in the woods this time, rather than in the middle of a field, to give the cubs a different experience of camping. The camp started on Friday afternoon, with everyone arriving at 5 O'clock. The cubs set up their own tents before having a tour of the site to see what activities they would be taking part in over the weekend, and came back shortly before the evening meal. As the cubs were getting ready to sit down to eat, one of the trees on our part of the site decided to shed one of its (rather large) branches, sending cubs scattering in all directions to avoid it, Luckily nobody was in the way when it hit the ground, but it certainly gave us all a scare. After the evening meal the Cubs played a wide game or two, before heading off to bed in anticipation of the weekend to come. Early (6:30!!!!) on Saturday morning the cubs were up and about, full of the joys of spring, and after breakfast, started on the day's activities, which for Saturday included Archery, fire lighting, air rifles, grass sledging and tracking. We were Joined for the day by the Beavers, who had their own specially devised programme to keep them entertained. Lunch was cooked backwoods style (no that's not a typo!) and was thoroughly enjoyed all , especially the wasps, who we discovered had a nest nearby!. After dinner, the Cubs and Beavers converged on the campfire circle to have a traditional campfire complete with songs and sketches, and in accordance with tradition, Akela had no voice left at the end of it!! The Beavers went home to their nice comfortable beds, while the cubs played another couple of wide games and then, after hot chocolate around the fire, hit the sack. Sunday was another action packed day, again with plenty of activities. Potholing proved to be good fun, although slightly muddy, and the climbing and abseiling both went down well too. Late in the afternoon the leaders decided it would be a good idea to cool everybody down with an impromptu water fight. It took 45 minutes to fill all the water bombs and about three minutes to throw them all (mainly at the leaders) The cubs also had a go on the Zip Wire and assault course. After a barbeque for tea, the cubs finished their day with a game of rounder's on the main field and more hot chocolate around the fire. Monday was the final day, so to give leaders time to start taking down the tents, the cubs were taken away for a hike, which as always, went completely according to plan (note the hint of sarcasm in that statement!!). On their return, the cubs helped finish off breaking camp before they heading home after an exciting weekend which was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everybody who came along to help out - Akela (Jon), Baloo and King Louie (Wayne and Karen) Jackala (Mike) and also to those parents who came along to help (Trish and Caroline) and especially to Russ and Jeannette who have now very kindly offered to help us on a regular basis. It would not have been possible to put this weekend on without the help and effort from all involved.

Finally a big thank you to everybody who helped us with our fundraising evening in July, We raised over £300 for the group, which was split between the cubs and beavers to purchase new equipment and to go towards the cost of activities.
